HMSE targets underserved areas, diverse applicants and applicants who are looking for alternatives to college. HMSE partners with schools, CTE programs and non-profits to seek out candidates who are interested in the field of construction and those who are simply searching for new and interesting opportunities to learn.
Each host camp recruits in their area. Students fill out applications that are reviewed by the host camp and select the students who show the most interest and motivation to attend the camp.
Through the generosity of our industry partners and sponsors, students will be equipped with work boots, PPE, tool bags and all tools needed for their camp experience. Marketing materials will also be provided to help promote your camp to local schools and non-profit organizations.
However, participating host locations are responsible for providing the main location/learning environment for students to complete their HMSE program. You’re also responsible for providing any sheet metal, piping or electrical materials for the projects you plan to have students create during camp, and you must coordinate transportation for students if you plan to visit a jobsite or local union.
Insurance requirements vary by state and participating contractor firm, and you must have the proper documentation on file before your camp starts. Be sure to check with your lawyer to make sure you go through all the right legal processes.
Now, it’s time to follow up with your campers and encourage them to apply for an apprenticeship program with one of the local unions in your area. Consider offering letters of recommendation upon the completion of your camp to students who would make good candidates.
